The Turn (Sonnet)

MY bliss has faded; I’ve let the days
Depart from me. I have not spent the sweet
Vigor of youth; nor have I run my race:
Still there are summer’s prizes, summer’s streets.

I’ve hoped for grace, but desire has made me pursue
Burning passions that do not want to wane.
But nearing my goal, self-doubt would always ensue:
I’ve felt unworthy of all that I might gain.

But today I walk the peak and look out past
What falls below me—cliffs and toils and tides
And in the rising sun, hope unsurpassed:
The world’s enough to hold me; my faith flares bright.

And I hear a voice in Autumn’s overture:
Hold steadfast, friend, the present is the future.
